Be a Part of a Christmas Miracle!

Some dogs find it hard to make it out of the shelter whether because of their breed, their size, their color, their health, or their age. Hummer (left) and Champagne (right) are two of those dogs. They are a pair of bigger dogs, likely a lab mix and maybe an Akita/American Bulldog mix??? One thing we know they are is unique.

They're both older and Hummer has a bit of arthritis that makes him a little stiff.

His sister Champagne had a skin problem when she came and, it turns out, has hypothyroid (easily treatable with daily meds.)

Still, it would be hard to find two dogs with greater zeal for life!

They play like puppies (if in short bursts).

And they are tightly bonded. When they were separated for Champagne's treatment, Hummer was very sad and anxious.

And when reunited he could not be happier!

They do not have to go together but they would be perfect pals for someone who wants a couple of older dogs who are sweet as can be, are hilarious pals, and love romping outside and lounging on the couch. They love playing and they soak up all the attention and back scratches they can get.

They aren't great on the leash right now, especially Champagne, but you can teach an old dog new tricks. They are both food motivated which should help with training and when they are getting more regular exercise, and perhaps harnesses for walking, they will probably be much easier to handle together.

These two are diamonds in the rough waiting to be great family dogs to someone who knows that great things sometimes come in funny looking packages. Please give them a chance to charm you and visit them in the shelter.

Need some Diva-tude?

This gorgeous red girl is Diva, an American Pit Bull Terrier mix.

She's young, maybe 1 year old and quite affectionate with people. She likes walks and attention and dogs some zooming in play but she also listens quite well and will sit when asked.

See her preparing to sing? She's a little tense around other dogs and will need further socialization. She'd probably be best as an only dog but we haven't worked much with her yet.

She's a striking girl with those awesome ears and soft eyes. Do you need a girl with some 'tude in your house?

Looking for a Baby Girl?

Meet Baby Girl! She's only been at the SPCA for a few weeks and is already a favorite.

She has a lot of enthusiasm for life and divides her time between toys and attention.

While full of joy, she's very attentive and fairly good on the leash. She listens well and is learning to walk on the leash.

We are still learning about her but she doesn't seem to be too interested in cats and is relatively calm around other dogs.

She deserves a great home that will love her as much as she loves life.

Meet Emilee!

Emilee is a young American Pit Bull Terrier mix. She is on the small side for the breed and has a thin build. Here she is outside crawling on top of one of our volunteers. When she was out with two volunteers and couldn't decide whose lap she wanted to be in, she just got in both laps!
Emilee is a friendly girl who is always excited to go outside and once she calms down a bit she's pretty good on a leash. She loves toys and would be great in a home where her abundant affection is returned with attention and some stuffy toys.

Emilee is a great dog waiting for a new family.

Meet Blueberry!

This happy girl is blueberry, a younger American Pit Bull Terrier Mix. She seems on the young side and her small size and stout shape may mean she has a little hound in her. Who knows. Her best feature is her giant grin!

She is very quiet and even a little shy but she's as sweet as a blueberry. But when she's outside she knows how to cut loose and have a good time.

She loves to play and get affection and can be a real show off when she gets going playing. She seems like a wonderful dog who is waiting for the right family to take her in and help her open up and enjoy life. See that tail wagging, just waiting for you?

Meet Eve

Whoa! Meet Eve! Up close and pawsonal!

She's a gorgeous and goofy girl who loves to run. She's an American Pit Bull Terrier on the larger side. She loves getting attention and going for a good romp. She loves to run and play but doesn't seem to know how to play with toys yet.

She is not good with cats and is very strong and in need of leash manners. She'd make a great home for someone, especially with breed experience, who wants a dog to go running with them or for long walks. With some attention, obedience classes, and plenty of exercise she will make someone a great companion.

Meet Terri!

Terri was found roaming in Wilmington. Can you believe someone let this beautiful girl go? She's a fun loving American pit bull terrier mix, mostly white. She seems to be in good shape other than a few skin issues that are clearing up.

As you can see she has very striking eyes, one blue, one brown. She needs a little work on her leash walking but is very friendly and loves to wiggle and wag her tail when anyone pays attention to her. She'd make a great dog for someone who wants a walking partner and a friend on the couch.

Meet Chanel!

This lovely lady is Chanel. She came in with a litter of 10 pups and did a great job raising them so they could all find homes. Unfortunately, sometimes moms get left behind when their babies get adopted and Chanel is still waiting for a great home.

She is quite pretty--here you see her giving tips to the resident photographer--and friendly. She needs to learn leash manners but loves giving kisses and getting attention.

Are you classy enough for some Chanel?

Clarabelle, my belle!

Meet Clarabelle, an American Pit Bull Terrier, medium-sized with an extra large heart. As you can see, she has a problem with one of her eyes that has caused blindness in that eye, though it does not cause her any serious health problems and she gets around just fine.

See? ZIP! She is playful and likes to spend equal time playing and sitting in laps getting attention. She seems fairly quiet and calm and while she will need some lessons in obedience (and who doesn't?) she is already pretty good on the leash.

She's a great dog just waiting for a great person to take her on.

Meet Melodii!

Did someone say fun? This is Melodii, a pitbull mix, probably under the age of 5. She was removed from a home in Wilmington because she was not registered in accordance with city laws. In the shelter she's a sweet girl who likes to go outside and play with toys.

She's enjoys a nice squeaky toy and a game of tug.

She needs a little work on her leash manners, which is not unusual for shelter dogs, but she is a happy-go-lucky dog who loves the company of people and toys alike. She seems non-reactive around other dogs and does not seem food or toy possessive. Like most pitbulls her favorite thing is getting lots of attention and pets from humans and she seems to love everyone she meets. She's a keeper!

Note: The Delaware SPCA cannot guarantee the temperament of any dog in our custody though they do their best to screen dogs to find the homes most appropriate for them. All dogs will be spayed or neutered and given vaccinations before leaving the shelter.
