Meet Blueberry!

This happy girl is blueberry, a younger American Pit Bull Terrier Mix. She seems on the young side and her small size and stout shape may mean she has a little hound in her. Who knows. Her best feature is her giant grin!

She is very quiet and even a little shy but she's as sweet as a blueberry. But when she's outside she knows how to cut loose and have a good time.

She loves to play and get affection and can be a real show off when she gets going playing. She seems like a wonderful dog who is waiting for the right family to take her in and help her open up and enjoy life. See that tail wagging, just waiting for you?

Hap-paw Thanksgiving!

I'm Otis, a proud graduate of the Delaware SPCA and I wanted to take a moment in this blog to share with you what I'm thankful for on this pawliday!

  • I'm thankful for the wonderful staff at the SPCA who works hard every day to make sure the dogs and cats are comfortable and happy and work tirelessly to find us new homes.
  • I am thankful for the many volunteers to take a few hours out of their day to help out, and especially our volunteer coordinator Kelly who works really hard for peoples and dogs.
  • I am thankful for shelter staff and management who have worked hard to save as many animals as they can, even guys like me who were old and sick when we came into the shelter. I have to give special thanks to Jack who always gives us big heads some extra love and Bonnie who gives special care to the older dogs.
  • I am thankful for the new Delaware law that improves shelter standards and works toward reducing euthanasia.
  • Thank you to vets. Even though you poke and prod us we know it's good for us.
  • Thank you to everyone who has been adopted by a shelter pet.
  • I am especially thankful for my thanksgiving dinner. Let's eat!

Meet Eve

Whoa! Meet Eve! Up close and pawsonal!

She's a gorgeous and goofy girl who loves to run. She's an American Pit Bull Terrier on the larger side. She loves getting attention and going for a good romp. She loves to run and play but doesn't seem to know how to play with toys yet.

She is not good with cats and is very strong and in need of leash manners. She'd make a great home for someone, especially with breed experience, who wants a dog to go running with them or for long walks. With some attention, obedience classes, and plenty of exercise she will make someone a great companion.

Meet Terri!

Terri was found roaming in Wilmington. Can you believe someone let this beautiful girl go? She's a fun loving American pit bull terrier mix, mostly white. She seems to be in good shape other than a few skin issues that are clearing up.

As you can see she has very striking eyes, one blue, one brown. She needs a little work on her leash walking but is very friendly and loves to wiggle and wag her tail when anyone pays attention to her. She'd make a great dog for someone who wants a walking partner and a friend on the couch.

Meet Chanel!

This lovely lady is Chanel. She came in with a litter of 10 pups and did a great job raising them so they could all find homes. Unfortunately, sometimes moms get left behind when their babies get adopted and Chanel is still waiting for a great home.

She is quite pretty--here you see her giving tips to the resident photographer--and friendly. She needs to learn leash manners but loves giving kisses and getting attention.

Are you classy enough for some Chanel?

Meet Exodus!

Exodus came into the SPCA as a cruelty case. He was severely underweight and had lost much of the fur on his back with bad skin problems. He is slowly putting on weight and getting his lovely black coat back.

And as you can see he has spotted socks. He is a border collie mix and is a very interesting looking fellow.

He is very good on the leash and a pretty calm guy. He doesn't seem to know much about toys or playing yet but he is interested in people, walking, and exploring generally.

He will be a great dog for a lucky owner who puts in a little time for training and exercise.

Meet Calvin!

Did someone ask for the most handsome dog ever? That's Calvin Klein! He's an American Bulldog mix who looks like he may have a little boxer on him. He's a big guy but a little on the small side for an American Bulldog.

Calvin was turned in by his owner who could no longer afford to keep him. He's a little underweight and has some skin problems and sores that are still healing. He's a bit shy at first but he warms up quickly and loves anyone who pays attention to him.

He has good leash manners and is very quiet. He's gentle taking food and appreciates a good back scratch. He is also pretty low energy and would make a great couch potato for someone looking for a must see TV partner. Looking for an owner who doesn't mind a dog who turns more heads than they do.

Meet the Munch-kin!

This handsome fellow is Munch, a young American Pit Bull Terrier around 40 pounds.

He's a quiet guy and a little inscrutable. He is a beautiful chocolate brown. He likes going for walks and, as you can see, letting loose while playing!

He's already neutered and ready to go. With regular exercise and attention Munch will make a great companion. He warms up to people quickly and enjoys playing with toys. We are not certain how he is around cats or other dogs. He is quite the looker and a lot of folks take a peek at him. He just hasn't found the right family yet!

Meet the Maverick!

Meet Maverick! He's such a maverick he's wearing a cow's spots!

Mav is a young American Pit Bull Terrier male. He was found as a stray in Wilmington and was super-duper shy when he first came into the shelter which is not unusual. As he's been around more people, dogs, and new experiences he has come out of his shell.

Once he gets to know you he likes to let loose and romp a bit and will let you give him pets and snacks. He has grown very attached to the staff and volunteers who spend regular time with him and he will surely be attached to his new adopters.

He would be a great dog for someone looking for a young medium sized dog to be active with. We are sure that as he becomes more confident he will be a fantastic and loyal dog.

Clarabelle, my belle!

Meet Clarabelle, an American Pit Bull Terrier, medium-sized with an extra large heart. As you can see, she has a problem with one of her eyes that has caused blindness in that eye, though it does not cause her any serious health problems and she gets around just fine.

See? ZIP! She is playful and likes to spend equal time playing and sitting in laps getting attention. She seems fairly quiet and calm and while she will need some lessons in obedience (and who doesn't?) she is already pretty good on the leash.

She's a great dog just waiting for a great person to take her on.

Meet the Beast!

Today we are introducing you to a super special dog.

It's BEAST! His name is ironic because it would be hard to find a nicer dog.

See that smile? It never goes away.

Beast was at the SPCA for almost a year before he got adopted. Sadly, he was returned through no fault of his own (unless excessive awesomeness counts). His adopters circumstances changed and they could no longer keep him. But their loss could be your gain.

He's an American Pit Bull Terrier between one and two years old, healthy, and happy-go-lucky. Beast is very friendly with people and dogs and he mostly ignores cats. He loves to play with other dogs and would be the perfect companion for an active person who likes to walk or jog or someone with another dog who needs an exercise companion. He's interacted with smaller dogs, bigger dogs, and dogs his size. He loves to play and get attention but he also can keep himself occupied with toys or just hanging out in the yard.

He could use a little leash work but with plenty of exercise and some tender loving care this Beast could be your Beauty! If we had room we'd take him home ourselves!

Here are some shots of Beast playing with his friend Oscar!
