Happy Howl-o-Ween!

Munch and all the other dogs 'n cats at the SPCA wish everyone a Happy Howl-o-Ween! We'd also remind everyone, for safety:

  • Keep all dogs and cats secured and inside. They can be easily spooked by unusual noises and costumes.
  • Make sure your pets are secured before opening the doors to distribute candy so no one slips out to do some trick or treating on their own.
  • Chocolate is hazardous for dogs so keep all candy securely up and away from them.
  • Have fun!

Meet Melodii!

Did someone say fun? This is Melodii, a pitbull mix, probably under the age of 5. She was removed from a home in Wilmington because she was not registered in accordance with city laws. In the shelter she's a sweet girl who likes to go outside and play with toys.

She's enjoys a nice squeaky toy and a game of tug.

She needs a little work on her leash manners, which is not unusual for shelter dogs, but she is a happy-go-lucky dog who loves the company of people and toys alike. She seems non-reactive around other dogs and does not seem food or toy possessive. Like most pitbulls her favorite thing is getting lots of attention and pets from humans and she seems to love everyone she meets. She's a keeper!

Note: The Delaware SPCA cannot guarantee the temperament of any dog in our custody though they do their best to screen dogs to find the homes most appropriate for them. All dogs will be spayed or neutered and given vaccinations before leaving the shelter.

Donation Day!

The dogs, cats, and humans at the SPCA thank the DelTech softball team for their generous donation of many much needed items at the shelter. They generously volunteered their time and efforts to give these many items to the shelter. The humans love the stuff like laundry detergent, we dogs love the milk bones!

Our wish list of donations is here if you'd like to donate items to us.

Pitbull Awareness Day!

Hi! I'm Otis the Potus (Pitbull of the United States), a proud graduate of the Delaware SPCA, and I'd like to tell you about yesterday's RALLY FOR HOPE held to celebrate Pitbull Awareness Day! They started at Companimals Pet Rescue in PA and rode down to the SPCA where we had a big par-tay to celebrate pit bulls!

Here they are setting up the Companimals Booth selling t-shirts designed just for our event! You can find dashing pitbull t-shirts here.

This lovely lady presided over the Companimals booth in her rally for hope T!

And there was a DJ, a band, obedience and agility demos and there were booths set up to promote area rescues, sell dog cookies, more shirts, arts, ice creams and my favorite...BBQ!

Oooh, I quite enjoy this art (not to be eaten with BBQ).

The bikers arrived around 2 p.m. after their ride.

Some of the SPCA's dogs came out for a stroll.

And these lil' guys got to dress up in their Halloween costumes to play!

A bit too much for an oldster like myself!

I heartily endorse the BBQ and the awareness of the awesomeness of pit bulls!

Thanks for organizing such a great event, Companimals and SPCA! We hope that you raised a lot of money and even more awareness for our awesome breed.

We hope to have some video from the day up later this week.

Welcome to the Delaware SPCA Blog!

Welcome! This is a blog maintained by volunteers about the Delaware SPCA hoping to give another avenue of attention for the wonderful pets-in-residence at the shelter. We are (l to r), Otis, Ethel, and Oscar, all shelter dogs (The Os are from the DSPCA!). We will introduce you to some of the great dogs and cats who could wind up in your house. We will also have information about events at the SPCA, profiles of the staff and volunteers, tips on living with your rescue pet, and, we hope, updates on some of the wonderful pets who have been placed from the SPCA.
